At work I have an old old old container full of kerosene. We need to get rid of it. We don't have anything that is made to burn kerosene (heater, etc). So we are looking to burn it off. Was wondering if it will ignite, and what I should expect of it. Is there going to be a big explosion or flame - that sort of stuff. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.....

Since it is an old container I'm going to assume the Kerosene is old as well. Trying to burn it now would be very dangerous not to mention very polluting. You should contact a place that accepts hazardous waste and will dispose of it for you but there is a catch. When you contact a company to dispose of it make sure they will accept responsibility for it and properly dispose of it. The government makes you (Your Company) responsible for the waste from "Cradle to Grave" I'm sure there are others out there but one that I have used in the past is Safety Clean. Good Luck

kerosene is a step above fuel oil it dose'nt go like gasoline. you are not saying how big a container you got, kerosene won't go bad like gas i have had 15 gal of it stored for my heater for the last 4 years in case the furnace quits in the winter and at 3.25 a gallon i would put an ad in the local paper for free someone will come if 5 gal..if small container pour in a steel low container not trash can put a good bunch of rags in it to get it soaked up and light but as soon as it starts to go step back and let it burn out. in a safe area of course

The best thing to do is to contact your local paint store. Believe it or not, it is considered a hazardous waste, like paint. Ask your paint store where the local collection point is.

As far as burning, kerosene is very toxic to burn directly and can explode if not done correctly.

You might want to check with your local gas station and ask them if they have any regular customers than can use it.

Good Luck!

Kerosene is also called diesel, or mineral spirits. It's the same stuff people use in diesel vehicles.

Advertise it in the (free to you) give away column in your newspaper. It'll be gone before the morning passes.
