People think that you catch more viruses with broadband, because a) it is very fast and b) it is on all the time. The truth is, anything you can catch on broadband you can also catch on dial-up. Antivirus software is an absolute necessity, something that actively scans all file traffic all the time. Everybody should have a firewall, the Windows firewall is not perfect but it couldn't be any easier to use. Antispyware software is a no-brainer, the best in the business are free.

+Broadband is a way to transfer a lot more information to your computer at one time (making it much faster than dial up and it has the capability of remaining on all day long since you do not have to 'dial up' each time you need to get on the web)
+Dial up is much slower and was designed to transfer smaller bits of information at once (It was made for just talking on the telephone! and was engineered to be used for transferring Internet info, but quite inefficient)
now the virus part...
You can get viruses just as easy through dial up as broadband. A virus is code that can be transfer ed to your computer regardless of if you are using broadband or dial up (they both transfer information regardless if one is faster than the other)
What you need is a firewall to protect your computer from a virus or infection regardless of whether you have dial up or broadband. Consider investing in a Virus software like Norton Anti virus (this will contain most of what you need including a firewall)
take care and happy holidays!

Dial -up means you have to use your phone and dial-in with a modem to an isp to get a connection to the internet...best speed is close to 56K depending on your phone line.
Broadband is wayy faster than dial-up, it can be via dsl over the phone line or cable through your cable connection. Both also require a modem, either dsl or cable. Speeds can approach at 6 mbp, some are claiming faster.
Yes, broadband can be always on, but if you have a good firewall via your router and virus scanner and anti-spyware, it becomes less likely to get infected.
Check the forums at dslreports.com for more info.

I had that same problem. Right when Broadband got hooked up, about 56 viruses came in and our computer crashed completley. After a good system restore and some advice, we bought Firewall, virus, and spyware protection. Stick with Webroot and McAfee, they have the best features and they won't fail ya. Broadband stay on at all time but with mcafee, you can block all inbound traffic so that while your away, you know you won't get viruses! Basically, make sure that you have really good protection!
