You know, the usual:

long t shirts, baggy pants, rap music, acting tough, saying words like "homie" and "crackalackin" and most famously now, "n*gga"

What is your opinion on the whole culture and it's people?

I love the culture. The slang is used so squares like you don't know what we're talking about. It's OK if you underestimate us & think we're not intelligent. The culture has found it's way into the mainstream. You can't stop it.

Hip Hop culture has started to mean black culture and they are not the same thing. I detest the images of T and A, gold, and the use of the N word. Once again it is young people creating something worse out of something that originally had flavor. Original rap from Run DMC and Will Smith pre mega movie star was good back in the 80's and had a style and reflections of life in a sing song type of beat. Even then there were misuses of the new style of music. but now-not so much. "it's people" include all colors of listeners as seen when I turn to a vehicle thumpin so hard MY windows are shaking , curse words are flying and it is a car full of white kids with a couple of hispanics and blacks ....Eminem and lessor know white brothers have shown that hip hops people vary as much as the music.
And by the way there is NO WAY any song, spelling, joking can make the N word (or the H word, the MF word the T and A words) sound better or mean something positive..

This is a very signficant question that requires some great thought before response. I hope my answer is reflective of my true inner thoughts as well as my hopes for the future. First, I have to say that because I am older and hopefully wiser, I have seen this generation of 'hip hop' move from one place to another. As the young people have been born and adapted to the style of music presently in their cultures, they have opted to make revisions based upon the society and history they have made. I think that this culture began with African Americans as a continuous opportunity to establish themselves as whole persons with ideas and expressive history, talents and gifts, and others thougth this would eventually "go away". But it grew. And like much of what happens in our world - it spread from the black culture and environment to the typical 'white' suburbs. Young whites began to pick up on and mesh into this culture and use it to express their own hidden views and desires., as well as other cultures (Asians, Spanish, etc.) I have always said that we are ONE PEOPLE -and our young folks are the ones who will eventually bring us all together if we listen. It seems the music of hip hop is the key that is shaking and unlocking so many doors that were closed before. I don't necessarily like the transference of certain terms, nor do I necessarily like the "clothing" that is used to advance this expression, but I am wise enough to know that in my day - the same avenues were tredded: noticeable clothing, hair styles, music, shoes - were what we did to show the older generation that we were different. These same kids will look at the next generation and they, too will have something that will be used to reflect their own inhibitations and unrestraints. It's an evergrowing process, an ever growing change. That's the way - of the world. Plant a flower, and you'll grow a pearl. Child is born, with a heart of gold, Way of the world- our future is told. That's just the way it is. Embrace it - learn from it - accept it - I love it. It's who we all are. From the Rembrants and Beethovans to the Martin Luther Kings and Kennedy's - people will always have a 'hip hop' style which only means - 'different' way of doing things to integrate into our mainstream. And generations after generations will look back and see how the cutlure of people (black, white, asian, whoever) was established and learned to live in the world.

I love it and couldn't imagine how boring life would be with out it. It's as much a part of American culture as Apple Pie. Some people might get mad, or not understand that statement but, Hip-Hop originated here in America. It's a great way to express who you are and always try to come up with the newest line, beat, dance, dress. It's more than just "baggie jeans", battling DJ's and new vocab, it is it's own way of life. It's no more different than growing up on a beach and living and dieing surf or growing up on a ranch and living and dieing being a cowboy. For all those who just can't understand, seek to find the answers, and on that path you will find understanding and wisdom. And I disagree that Hip-Hop is dead, it's just in hibernation, there are still true MC's doing real music, because they love it and not just for the money.

I don't think it's an image that you should attribute to an entire race just because you see it on BET. I think people should realize a lot of the times it is just an image to sell and they shouldn't try to emulate it. I think that by your description of it, it sounds overgeneralized, It's not exactly all there is to hiphop culture it's a specific segment of it and I can kind of tell that you are assuming it's a "black" thing. Personally I think it's uneducated and trashy, but again it's what's selling to some people and the ones who chose to be like that can pretty much do what they want it doesn't affect my life.
