I never really gave the Amish people much thought until a couple of years ago. I am from Texas and while visiting my in laws up in Ohio I asked my husband to take me on a drive out in the Amish areas. I was completely amazed. We did stop at one house to look at quilts they had for sale ( to buy for a gift ). I was a little apprehensive at first as I did not know what to expect. The woman took us into a small side room where she kept them all and on the way there we saw all the rooms lit dimly with oil lamps and just completely sparce belongings. I was just amazed at their strong beliefs and convictions for being able to live this way. She and her husband were both very polite and nice as well. We had our nephew with us who was tapping away at his GameBoy the entire time and they even let their son check it out as he was very interested in it.
After we left there, we drove the roads just sightseeing and we saw them on the horse and buggies and everyone we passed gave us a nod and a wave. We saw the cornfields already done for the season with the cornstalks having been bound together by hand. It was just amazing to see how these people lived with bare essentials ( although the house we stopped at next for maple syrup ) did have a modern day washer and dryer in a laundry room. After seeing hands on how they live, I respect them...I don't think I could do it for a day! I hope they can continue their way of life...they seem pretty happy with it.

We'd all be much happier and healthier if we lived that lifestyle. And if we never had the modern things, we wouldn't miss them.

I really want them to stand up for themselves.
But most of all, I hate people taking advantage of their beliefs.
