Use a long handled iced tea spoon or even a table knife to stir the formula well.

You should never shake a baby bottle when the baby is an infant. As they get older it's easier for them to pass gas so it's not that big of a deal. But, the formula would clump up in the "straw" I'd think.
I always stored the water in the bottle (careful because they leak if they aren't upright) and used another (munchkin or tupperware) container for the formula. I'd pour the water in a bowl or glass and mix with a spoon. Then, I'd pour the formula back into the bottle.
If you shake you are defeating the purpose of the Dr. Browns bottles. Also, be sure to NOT overfill. As, the patented air release system (the straw) won't capture the air.
I used these with my son, who is now almost 10 months. These were a life saver and kept him from ear aches and gassy nights!

I use Dr. Browns with my son. I always shake the formula in the bottle. I just make the bottle ahead of time and let it sit for about 10-15 minutes this lets the air bubbles release. The reason why they say don't shake on the instructions is because they don't want you to shake it and then immediately give the bottle to the baby. That would defeat the purpose because their would be tons of bubbles in the bottle.. just let it settle for a few minutes and then it's fine! They are great bottles though.. and really helped my son!

My son drinks out of the Dr. Brown bottles and I use a spoon or a knife to mix up the formula. Helps big time. I also make my bottles in the morning and we go through them as we need them.

I never used Dr. Brown bottles. I can't imagine why you couldn't shake them. I understand the air issue. I would just keep doing what you are doing. Do the directions tell you how to rid the bottle of any air? All babies get some amount of air no matter what you do. I would just make sure you get as little air as possible in them. And make sure to burp them really well.
Good Luck!

Make the formula in a cup and "stir" it with a spoon...way less air bubbles, then transfer it to the bottle. This works great.

i am currently using those bottles myself my 4 week old, don't shake the bottle up and down, just stir the formula while in the bottle in a circular motion.

Personally, I just put a drop of Mylicon in each bottle and all the bubbles from shaking it dissolve in a second.

with every bottle there should have been a plastic stopper that came with the bottle.....put the plastic stopper over the top (without the straw in it) to shake the bottle up...then you can replace it with the straw for feeing
