I work in an environment... Many Type A persons were in the environment and I found it difficult to deal with the hostility, disrespect, terseness, and unfriendliness around me. Additionally, the lack of diversity compounded my alienation. My desk faced a busy corridor, and I never felt safe, or able to relax. The phone was constantly ringing, and persons in my immediate environment were extremely intimidating. I dealt with what I believe was discrimination and intimidation and harassment. Although I tried to put on a positive face every day, the environment wore me down gradually, until I felt like a victim.
Should I have walked out? What would you do/have done?

I've taken a psychology class 101, and just finished a paper on stress, and just realized how negative this situation is/was. I'm now supermotivated to leave. But financially can't quit. I even think the entire company is wrong. Financial Services is pretty cut throat...

I second guessed my sensitivity for 2 years!!! Yes, I've been there that long. My self -esteem went in the toilet, and I questioned my abilities - even though I have an MBA and went to a top tier university.
I am contemplating a career change and am back in school taking psychology courses.

You should absolutely have quit.
You are quite obviously intelligent, a terrific writer, and I cannot imagine it will be too difficult to get another job.

I've been in the same situation. It was literally a spiritual vacuum. I had never been so unsure of myself. In all honesty, it was hurting my heart, causing panic attacks, and if I hadn't left when I did I would have let it suck the spirit out of me. Nothing, absolutely NOTHING, is worth that.
I also felt paranoid (is it just me?), hugely disappointed in myself (why can't I just make it work out?), and let myself be taken advantage of. Not to even mention the depression brought about by spending most of my time in that environment.
DON'T DO THAT TO YOURSELF!!
You'll save yourself a heck of a lot of psychological pain and doubt.

Perhaps you should look into Psychology. There are so many fields and such need!(although I can tell you from experience, the pay isn't too great - but the rewards are well worth it).
The best of luck to you!!

We all work in an "environment". Phones ring, corridors are busy, that is all part of a working business. You aren't at work to relax, you are there to work. i think that you are being too sensitive. Maybe you just need more experience and learn to let some things roll off of you. Your co-workers may be busy and you are taking it as coldness. Step back and take another look at the situation and if it is as you think it is, then by all means leave this job.

I think you really tried, i dont know if u still work there, but if you do, u should really consider finding a new job that is a pleasat place to work, because it is like a second home, it is where you spend most of you day,... sometimes people dont like their job but since they have a good time joking now and then with their co workers it makes the day go by faster,... if ur still there definetively u should look for another job ASAP!

the best luck to you :)

If you're not comfortable in your workplace environment, than you won't be productive.
You have to be comfortable, in all senses of the word to want to get up and face each and every day doing what you do.
Trust me, if you don't *LOVE IT* your whole being will suffer and it sounds pretty much like thats happening.
Get out now and move on to something better that will make you much happier.

Never quit a job until you found a new one. Never. No matter what. It's much easier to find a job while you are employed And it may take you up to a year to find another job.

It's too late this time, but don't repeat your mistake. Another good slice of advice is: ALWAYS be looking for a better job. Keep you eyes out constantly for a better paying job so that you are always ready--- if you decide that's what you need to do.

Yes, you should have left. Obviously this place was not a good 'fit' for you. Their culture and yours are too divergent. In the future you need to look for a work environment that more closely matches your needs.

It's good that you have been able to identify what went wrong here so you won't repeat it, and won't blame yourself for it. It's not their fault either, it's just the company culture was wrong for you.

I can't believe you walked out on us!!!! This place is falling apart since you left. Please come back. We'll give you a 5 cent raise. Eh? We'll even move your desk to face the men's room. Come on. You need this job almost as bad as we need you. You were the only one who actually worked. The rest of us just stood around trashing each other. Now we've cleaned up our act and it's gonna be great now.

Whenever you feel that you're forcing yourself to go to work it is time to find another place of employment. Whether to walk out or not depends on whether you can afford to be without a job while you find another one, but I definitely would have been looking for one.

I have been in your position and actually am going through it now. It's hard especially of the money is good, but never ever sacrifice yourself for a situation you know isn't good. I'm sure your also aware you will never be recognized or appreciated so get the hell out.

That sounds awful. I would have left too. Sometimes you just know when a situation is all wrong, I'm sure you'll find something better if you haven't already!
