how do you figure out minute-by-minute whether an earthquake happened?

You can go to the following site:

http://earthquake.usgs.gov/

It shows earthquakes > 1 in the US, and > 4 in the world and is updated regularly (I just checked and the time on the image is only about 6 minutes behind my computer clock).
