I don't have a psychological need to upgrade, it's just that as I get more competent and used to a technology, I get frustrated when what I own is too slow or doesn't have the features I could really use. It's not embarrassing, just frustrating.

This doesn't apply to all electronics... my computer is a couple of years old, TV is probably 4+ years old, DVD I purchased 2ndhand. I purchased my home stereo in 1996. (But I also have an iPod!)

It could easily be a compulsion though, especially when you have friends who have all the latest gear.

It depends. I am an alpha-consumer (aka early adopter, trendsetter). I am the first in my school to get all the new stuff. If I like it, than more will buy it. If I don't, vice versa. I do feel a need to upgrade on most things simply out of this need to maintain the status of trendsetter. Sometimes, though, If the cost outweighs the gains, I will hold off and invest in something else.

If something is ridiculously slow, then I will get a new one sooner than most simply because I am a power user and notice the limitations sooner. However, many electronics don't have such limitations (ie TV, cellphone, DVD player, all the things the previous post mentioned)

There is a term for that called E-grading. Where someone wants to have the newest technology before his friends etc..
Men do it alot like me.
