scissors for the umbilical cord?

Yes, mostly to sterilize scissors, forceps, all that good stuff, but also to give the husband/kids/other something to do to keep them out of the way for a while.

Now we have sterile pre-wrapped tools for this, and it is actually more help for the father to be present for the birth. Lots easier, huh?

I think it was funny though, my husbands mom is still in the old days, so when I went into labor with my first baby, she went to the kitchen and grabbed a pot! My hubby told her that we were going to a sterile hospital to have the baby, no need to boil water!!

I cracked up too hard, then stressed out!

Oh, how times change!

Yeah, probably sterilization and I thought cuz a warm clothe helps the woman stretch without ripping. Cuz in the movies they always show someone wringing out a rag from the hot water...

To sterilize whatever they were going to use to cut the cord, and probably to give the father something to do so he'd stay out of the way. = )

That was usually told to the husband. Boiling water took some time back then as you had to build a fire and get it hot enough. All of this kept him out of the way while his wife and the mid-wife got on with the job at hand.

No No No, it was to make tea....the fathers back then knew enough to wander off, get drunk for three days and come back when it all over AND cleaned up!

It was to keep the "fat, old, panicing husband/mate" out the way way so things could get done. It works.
