Make sure that there isn't anything saying that you cannot view images. I know that this is an option in Firefox, not sure about other browsers. If it is on, try reloading the page. Also, popup blockers might block some images in e-mails.

1. sometime pictures are hosted in servers...If the link is not correct or pictures has been removed ..it will appear X mark
2. Check your email setting to read as rich text or HTML...If it is not set, also images will appear as X mark
3. Images might be coming to ur inbox as attachement.

There should be a button somewhere that says: "Show Content" or something similar to that!
