Theoretically one can state 100+ alternatives to reduce production of green house gases... But practically most of the countries can not switch over to the new energy options at the required pace - further the new options may generate unexpected problems of their own... say, use of nuclear energy in the place of thermal power plants... the disposal of nuclear wastes, closing down an outlived nuclear station etc would pose more telling problems in the long run...

The more practical option would be to reduce unnecessary production of all sort of fancy and luxury items wasting the precious energy sources - friendly or hostile - but what happens now? The consumerism is in its peak and even normally contented citizens of developing countries like India are consuming all sort of things - going by the tempting ads of MNCs - particularly after the WTO... Trade indeed should grow but unnecessary items - not of utility value - may not be produced and marketed at the cost of future energy needs... and the safety of environment..

Solution: A Ceiling of Desires for more and more consumption...

did anyone else hear that with all the reduction in smog/pollution that more of the suns rays are reaching the surface of the earth and heating it up? This creates GASP SHOCK global warming.

There have always been heating and cooling trends in the earth. Ever hear of the ice age? Opposite of now and I'm sure it will happen again.

1) Every light switch from incandescent to compact fluorescent (use 20% of the energy, and are 100% efficient)
2)International mpg (km/l) minimum of 30 miles per gallon (or whatever that is in metrics) within 10 years, then gradually raise it
3)Use of technologies that are out there to boost fuel efficiency in all cars, whether they are gas, hybrid, or fusion
4)Increased use of nuclear power
5)Solar farms in every neighborhood

To answer the post before me, the difference with greenhouse gas heating is that the solar energy doesn't bounce back to space, it stays in the atmosphere. It is like an oven. If you leave it open, it cools. But if you block it with a door, then it will heat. More CO2 is like a giant oven. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
