What is aftershave and why do I need to use it? Why couldn't I just wash my face with soap and water after shaving? Does it matter much? Thanks!

First of all, you should wash your face PRIOR to shaving, and if shaving with a razor, keep it wet and with a little soap before applying shaving cream.

After shaving (regardless wet or dry), simply dry your face with a clean towel and apply aftershave.

Most all aftershaves have rubbing alcohol in them which cleans and closes the pores opened and exposed from shaving. And, if you have acne, shaving will typically expose blemishes as well, and the alcohol helps to dry those out and keep them clean.

It's a good thing!

You don't need to use it. You can even shave with just soap and water if you wanted to.
