Ingesting cannibis actually does get a person stoned, just in a different way. Ever hear of "special brownies"? They're not smoked!
Cannibis is considered a natural herb in many parts of the world, but keep in mind a few things. First, it is a medicine, just like iboprofen is a painkiller(which also can be attained naturally). However taking iboprofen for recreational use can be very harmful, and too much is very toxic. Just because something is natural doesn't mean it isn't strong medicine.
The second thing to consider is that marijuana, being a lucrative trade, has been bred and cross-bred many times to increase its potency. Therefore much of the cannibis you buy on the street will be very different from what grows wild. Also, there are different varieties of natural cannibis to start with; in India people mostly consume Ganja, whereas in North America most of what you get is Bhang. Different strains have different properties.
That said, I'm pretty sure enjoying the occasional special brownie is about as harmful as the occasional glass of wine. However, I'm not a doctor, so don't count on my advice for it!

There are many facets to your question. There aren't many effects from eating the leaves - and generally you don't smoke the leaves - you smoke the buds.
Cannabis has been used as a medicinal plant for hundreds of years. Its benefits are well recognized in treating some symptoms of chronic diseases such as cancer, muscular dystrophy, glaucoma. It is very effective for pain control, nausea control, and stimulation of appetite. Smoking cannabis is not nearly as harmful as smoking cigarettes, since if you have a good supplier you can be sure that the product is totally organic without chemicals.

ANY plant that is grown by people, will have pesticides and other chemicals inside the plant. When you BURN the plant, you release the pesticides and other chemicals into the air. Smoke the plant, you are breathing in all those chemicals. Eat the plant, and the chemicals stay inside of the plant, pass thru your body.
So if you smoke cigarettes, crack, mary-jane, or any other plant, you are breathing in pesticides. And THAT is bad news for your body.

smoking weed is only bad cause you are smoking it. no different than if you smoked a small twig as a kid...the twig isn't gonna hurt you, the smoke will.
eating pot will not harm you but will change the buzz from what it is for smoking it.

No, while eating it may save your lungs, the drug will still take its toll on your brain and body. Just because something grows naturally doesn't mean that it's okay to put into your body (poison ivy, for instance).
