Paint, decopage, stamp, collage, frotage (collage with all kinds of different things) cover with fabric, or any combination of the above.

You could paint it gold and glue old pieces of costume jewelry to it.
You could stain it with cellulose fiber dyes (procion MX).
You could color all over the whole thing in psycadelic designs with a rainbow of sharpie markers.
You could do wood burning on it.
Glue photographs to it.
Cover it with dried flowers.

It depends on the person you are giving it to. If you can find a miniature of something they like, slide that in top. Maybe you can decorate the outside by decoupaging pictures to it. I just did a recipe box by decoupaging pictures to it for my grandmother. I've also done some of the tiny boxes with the glass lids by painting them, and putting either pictures or fake flowers under the glass & then putting a little inspiring tile...
