Would I be a fair father in that case?

no offense.. but by doing that, your sorta commiting social suicide on your kids. if you want them to date at 17 years old they might not know how to handle a relationship. therefore relationships will fail easier. its better to practice now and let them learn from their mistakes. it might take them a long while to settle around with the person they like.

Yes you would be a fair and intelligent father! I am sick of seeing pregnant 12 year olds and teens with AIDS. I see a lot of Moms who push for dances in elementary school. What is wrong with letting children be children?? The disease rate is almost 90% in most colleges, and many of these girls will get cervical cancer. If you want to give your boy and girl a chance in life then monitor their behavior and make them aware of what life is like for a teen who has a baby. It's your house, and you make the rules! Chaperone everything. Merry Christmas to you and yours!!

If the insurance industry treats you as a teenager till you are 25 then 17 to date is more than reasonable. Also to the thirteen year old girl that answered! The words TRUST ME are the two most dangerous words in our vocabulary!

The longer you can influence your teenager to NOT date or mess around with the opposite sex -- the better it is for them ...

That said, I was a Long-Term Single Parent of two disabled children ... and I did my best to influence them to remain as children for as long as possible -- I wanted them to have a good education, work on securing their futures (and that means studying hard and going to college), and to be responsible young adults.

But there comes that day (Oh, the horror!) of when the child wants to go on a 'date' -- then the parent needs to make sure that the safety rules are in place. Once the dating starts - - well, parenting through it is Difficult -- (they are real moody buggers -- full of angst and raging hormones).

There going to date anyway, so I would be more open with them. And explain to them the do's and don'ts, and they'll be able to confide in you. This will be good for the rest of their lives, they'll feel they can trust you. When most kids don't tell there parents anything that goes on in their lives. And even if you say no, if a guy/ girl asks your kid out there not going to say "Oh no sorry, I can't my Daddy says I'm not allowed to date til' I'm 17."

Definitely much better. Kids grow up to fast now days. Sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies are on the rise among the preteens because of the peer pressure.

My husband agrees with you all the way. He said our daughter is not dating until she is 18 but I think that is just him being more protective of her over our 2 boys. You have to protect your children and you have to do what you think is right for them.

Theres no REAL answer to that question, anyone who says otherwise is not giving the full truth. It is all a matter of preference, but you have to set limits and boundaries.
