I noticed in some of the answers here that people think introverts prefer solitude to companionship.

I, a self-proclaimed introvert, beg to differ. It's true that sometimes, we introverts, need time alone to think our thoughts, but that does not mean we prefer solitude to companionship. I do not consider myself to be a loner and in most cases, if I have a choice of going somewhere or doing something by myself or having company (friend) to join me, I prefer my friend to come along for the ride.

Perhaps the ascetic may be a more appropriate answer. Here is a definition of ascetic - "practicing strict self-denial as a measure of personal and especially spiritual discipline" from Merrian-Webster Online Dictionary. So perhaps the ascetic denies himself the pleasure of companionship to achieve some spiritual goal through isolation (solitude).

I prefer solitude to companionship and am an introvert. I wasn't aware there was a word for someone like me.

This depends, they could also be an extremist?
But #4 is the answer. If they are an extremist they are called inverted personalities, sometimes anti-social.

Introvert, but all of us want to be alone sometimes. It makes no difference what people "label" you.

I just think someone who prefers solitude is someone who's happy with himself. Or they love the sound of their own voice. Happy Holidays! (#4)
