It's going round that the Marines and the Army are nearly "broken" due to being run ragged, and it's late the game to build troop levels.Do you think the Govt. can get enough troops on an all volunteer basis in time? How many more do you think are needed?

I don't think so. I hope it doesn't happen. I hope that pretty soon we will need fewer soldiers not more. I hope the radical terrorists find something else to do (or die).

if the news reports are to be believed then it will come to be before much longer, at the present enlistment rate of the services and that is all of them not just the army or marines, we can not raise another 30-40,000 troops so then we will have no choice but to re-institute the draft. At that time you will see all of those that spoke so much about being free and fighting to stay free going to Canada, to many people here in America speak of freedom but do not under any condition want to fight for it. The only choice then is to draft.

I don't think the United States will re-institute the draft for the Army and Corps. Well, if it does I guess I'll living in the UK, Canada, Caribbean, or Mexico. I think the United States re-institutes the draft there will be a huge uproar.

This is not likely to happen. The people of the US would never support it. However, I personally believe that some sort of compulsory service should be instituted. Armed Forces service would be beneficial to many, but I think there should be alternatives as well. Things like the Peace Corps, Federal & State programs similar to FDR's (WPA, CCC) to build/rebuild, or even religious missions could be substituted. This way everyone contributes (time and effort) to our society and everyone is better off. Other countries continue with mandatory service/conscription after high school and we would benefit from something similar with a few changes.

They not only will start the draft again but they will now draft women and push the age up to age 35 or 40 to insure they get as many warm bodies as they feel they'll need which is unlimited if they had to put a number on it! Don't be surprised if they also draft women about to have children as well!

No. Harry Reid (D, NV) already said that he would not pursue this when the Democrats gain power. There are a couple of politicians who want to do it, but they can be counted on one hand.

If Bush decides to respect Iraq's sovereignty and follow the timetable they have set, than the number of combat-ready reserve troops should increase dramatically over the next year.
