Who knows? I was a bass player in full-time rock 'n roll bands for 15 years. My girl friend (now my wife) use to say I made a 'fish face', kind of a blank expression with my mouth open a little and my lips mouthing my bass lines! I was never aware of it when I was doing it. I've seen and worked with guitar players who look like they're havin' a stroke when they're soloing. I've also seen classical musicians flailing their heads and bodies around like they're possessed! Maybe is just that we all really get into the music enough to allow the facial contortions and wacky movements! Like I said ... who knows?

It's being on stage that does it. Especially if you've got a good crowd, because they give you lots of energy to feed off of. You end up playing your songs faster than you normally play them and jumping around under hot stage lighting -- do this for about forty five minutes and it's very physical in a way you can't prepare for even with the most intensive practicing. If sweat gets in your eyes it burns. Your muscles in your arms start getting sore. Sometimes the callouses on your fingers start to hurt too. As you can imagine, it starts to show in your facial expressions.

I have no clue. My boyfriend does it too. I guess it is just a thing that some people do. My ex husband danced to techno music and he always made a face while doing that to.
