I'm sorry for your loss. We lost our Portugese Water Dog, Bear, in August. I would recommend them to any one. They are loving, affectionate, and easily trained. We will be getting a new dog soon, and I would have no problem getting another one. Again, sorry for your loss.

I highley suggest a Lab. We have one, she is absoulutley awsome around my four year old girl cousins, and she is so smart!
Labrador Retreiver

General Appearance
The Labrador Retriever is a strongly built, medium-sized, short-coupled, dog possessing a sound, athletic, well-balanced conformation that enables it to function as a retrieving gun dog; the substance and soundness to hunt waterfowl or upland game for long hours under difficult conditions; the character and quality to win in the show ring; and the temperament to be a family companion. Physical features and mental characteristics should denote a dog bred to perform as an efficient Retriever of game with a stable temperament suitable for a variety of pursuits beyond the hunting environment. The most distinguishing characteristics of the Labrador Retriever are its short, dense, weather resistant coat; an ''otter'' tail; a clean-cut head with broad back skull and moderate stop; powerful jaws; and its ''kind,'' friendly eyes, expressing character, intelligence and good temperament. The typical Labrador possesses style and quality without over refinement, and substance without lumber or cloddiness. The Labrador is bred primarily as a working gun dog; structure and soundness are of great importance.

Owning
The Labrador Retriever is gentle with children and the elderly. If it is intended as a pet, keep in mind that Labrador puppies are full of energy. The Labrador Retriever has a stable temperament and adapts to new surroundings easily. The Labrador Retriever is not an aggresive dog, but it will bark to ward off strangers.

Temperament
True Labrador Retriever temperament is as much a hallmark of the breed as the ''otter'' tail. The ideal disposition is one of a kindly, outgoing, tractable nature; eager to please and non-aggressive towards man or animal. The Labrador has much that appeals to people; his gentle ways, intelligence and adaptability make him an ideal dog.

Also, though I'm not a big fan of the experimenting, the Labradoodle a cross of a Poodle/Lab mix is also very friendley.

if you want a big dog you need to consider that alot of them develop problems when they are older, the pure breads can run you alot of money and not necessarily be worth it. If you get a puppy look at the mannerism, if they are healthy and happy looking also if they are active or playful vs skiddish and doesn't seem real friendly. I always liked huskys they can be temperamental though, golden retrievers are really good family dogs and they tend to be mild mannered and low maintenance. I am sorry for the loss I wish you the best in your search

SERIOUSLY Go to the pound and get a mixed breed ( Heinz 57 variety) They make the best pets. Pure breeds are more excitable and fiesty. They often like to bite and are high strung.

If they do not have any watch your newspaper for " free puppies to a good home " Make sure they are mixed breeds though. Then have your puppy spayed or neutered if you do not want more.

Good Luck and I am sorry for your loss.

I have a Siberian Husky that we got when he was 6 weeks old. They are really friendly dogs...BUT a lot of work. Timber, is like a child himself, always getting into things and not listening etc...He's been around kids before, but he likes to jump on people (not to be mean...just to love). I strongly recomend that if you find a breed that you are interested in, research it! I learned it the hard way. I probably wouldn't have gotten my dog, had I read all about him (I still have him though..2 years later).

My condolences on the loss of your dog, that's hard to go through.

I've owned many different breeds, and I have to say, hands down, the very best breed for kids is a Golden Retriever. Those I've owned and those I've known have all been happy, fun dogs who love to romp with kids but are just as content to cuddle up next to them and watch a movie. They are gentle dogs who put up with little children who might grab their tail or tug on an ear. They are very smart and easily trained.

Whatever breed you choose, best wishes on finding a dog who fits and bonds with your family.

My grandpa always had beagles. He had a female that he used to breed and we seemed like we always had a pup from her litters. I don't know of any dog that is more family friendly than beagles. They are not too small and not too big. They area loyal, loving and friendly dogs. I have always thought that there were not any cuter puppies than beagles. Maybe its a leftover from my childhood, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it!
