Because the tips of our finger are filled with nerve endings, we have fingernails to protect those nerve endings from damage.

In my opinion, I think they are for peeling scraping and maybe even cleaning ourselves. I think way back in the cave man days, they would use their finger nails to help with the food they ate. At least that is what I would think they were invented for :-)
