hold down the play/pause button about 5 seconds till the screen fades awayif it doesn't work try switching the hold button on and off. then reset the ipod by holding the center button and the menu button down at the same time until the apple logo appears on the screen.
then press the center button to get to the main menu, and hold down the play/pause button about 5 seconds again til it turns off.
if the ipod is not responding refer to apple.com/support or call you local apple store and set up an appointment with a mac genius

yep, just hold the play button down for a few seconds. sometimes you have to wait a minuite or so if you just finished charging it or just unplugged it from your computer.
