Dumbbell apartments get their name from their shape. they look like dumbbells from the top. Wide at the ends and narrow in the middle. You can also say they looked like the Letter 'H'.

They were easy to build, they could house a fairly large number of people and were relatively inexpensive as well.

I actually Lived in one of these apartments for a while, you can find them in almost every old city. They are small and cramped. the narrow portion of the building provided for air in rooms that were located on the sides of the buildings, since most buildings were now up against each other, it allowed residents to at least get some air and have a window. Not that you had much to see, if you were next to another dumbbell shaped building you saw your neighbors, if you were nest to a square building you were probably looking at a wall...

I looked at a wall.

The gap also created an alley way for garbage and service access.

They were very popular designs when immigration exploded in the late 18th - early 19th centuries.

I did a fast search and I wasn't able to find you any more info. I don't know how you can manage a page of info on them.

Good luck with your test.

I had that question in my College Freshman History class... man I feel old.

The purpose of the Dumbbell Apartment was actually well intentioned. On each floor, 4 apartments would provide families with ample living space that was meant to be clean and healthy.
