Yes, the standard keyboard layout was actually designed so that common letter-pairings would be far apart, thus slowing your typing down. This is because, in the old days, typewriters would jam up if you typed two letters together very quickly.
Since we no longer have this problem with computers, a new keyboard layout, Dvorak, is used by some people. The configuration of keys on this layout makes your typing much more efficient.

Yes they are, when type writters were first made, they made the QWERTY keyboard to keep from the letters sticking when stricking the page, QWERTY is whats its called because of the first 6 letters on the keyboard.
