sure go to any popular electronics store to just get any laptop.
Now if youre just a student or a low end user -- meaning youll do your school work, youll surf the internet, dont intend on playing any graphics intensive games..then right now that should be the average price for a solid laptop.

Also, you could try to customize one online or at the stores.
HP is pretty solid, not thes cheap gateways or compaqs (even though compaq and HP are the same company) I still prefer HP over compaq, and emachine over compaq, and wouldnt think about getting a gateway

Dells are popular but prone to finkle. So their in house warranty is good. But I stick to toshiba, or would contemplate an HP, or an Emachine.
(yes emachine) Good solid machines for me so far, and good customer support.

I saw a toshiba last week at walmart for 499.
Decent very capable for someone who wants a laptop and wont be playing hardcore gaming. Perfect for the student.

Look around. Let your mom know thats about the right price.
Keep your eye out for specials.
And all tat junk they are going to try selling you when you go buy one....most of it -- firewall, antivirus, spyware, even the office for students -- all that stuff you can get online for free.

SECRET about Best buy circuit City Office Depot is they dont make much profit off computers laptops monitors, they make their most markups off the accessories they sell you.
So a 500 laptop once youre finished, could turn into 800 and theyll kindly offer you to put it on their stores credit card.

And teyll smartly step away and have another person make you feel as if you need that service plan and youre dumb if you dont get it -- they work in pairs there.

SECRET -- Even though every computer salesperson says the manufacturers warranty doesnt cover electrical damage -- surges and the like -- IT DOES.
Call any computer manufacturer an THEY WILL fix your computer should you get damaged by a surge.

Try HP Pavillions. My school, which is a private school, has aproximatly 200 of them. Eventhough I do go to a private school, my school isn't a million dollar school! So I'd say those laptops are 600-maybe ever 700. I hope this helps!

Look at Bestbuy, they sell atm a decent laptop (a Toshiba Satellite) what is suitable for all regular jobs (no gaming!) for just $400. it can read and write CDs and read DVDs (but not burn them).

btw, Toshiba is a good brand.
