Her wedding ring? If there was ANY way to get it out of the wall without a professional then she would have tried it. No woman - still married, at least - would just shrug off a ring lost in a wall. Are you *sure* she didn't get it out? Since you were only one it's possible she retreived it and didn't think to tell you, or she told you so long ago you forgot.

Do you know where the hole winds up? As in, somewhere at the bottom of the wall? A vent? The floor? This will determine what kind of help you will need, and would get you better answers, I think.

It's dusty, you said, so sticky stuff loses stickiness. Before desperate measures, unwrap a coat hanger til it is long and straight - bend it so you can reach the bottom of the hole. Wrap the whole think in masking tape to capture the dust (those sticky lint brushes at the store are just rollers covered in layers of masking tape). Use it to remove the dust, retape as neccessary.

Once you get all the dust out, make a hook with one end of your coat hanger wire and wrap it with duct tape, sticky side out, and see what you can get!

Desparate measures would be hiring a contractor. Discuss this with your father. You could put money towards it. Getting that ring is a good idea.

Finally - don't feel guilty. You were a baby! Babies do things like that.

First off, I'd like to point out that if any sort of magnet scheme works, your dad either was conned, or really cheap! If the ring is made of any kind of self-respecting precious metal, i.e. gold or silver, it would not be attracted by any sort of magnet. Since obvious is a relative term in most cases, and I've seen some very dismal displays of intelligence on this site, believe me, I'm going to suggest some ideas that may seem obvious, but maybe you haven't considered. One suggestion would be to use a thin metal rod or stick with a piece of gum attached to the end, and attempt to stick the ring onto the gum. Since your description of the hole wasn't very detailed, I don't know how effective the gum would be. Another suggestion is to use the same general idea, only with two-sided tape. Depending upon the diameter of the ring, and how it is lying in the hole, you could design the end of the rod/stick to fit inside the ring and "fish" the ring out of the hole. A third suggestion is to attach a small diameter tube to a shop vac and suck the ring out of there. A fourth suggestion is to cut open the wall, get the silly thing, and give it back to your poor mom. What kind of child are you to deprive your precious mother of her cherished symbol of marriage for 13 years? But really, how hard would it be to fix the wall afterwards? You aren't decimating an entire wing of your house; a small cut in the wall would probably be sufficient. Then again, judging by your time line you are 14 years old, and might not have access to high enough quality tools to complete the job in a nice-looking way. Final comment: as a sign of growing up, most people start to take responsibilty for their own actions. It would be a great idea to do this for your mother, and will really show how much you care if you go to such great lengths for her. Merry Christmas!

The only thing I can suggest is to get a plumber out here, and if the walls are going to be wrecked then save up your money and have someone get in there and out within a week with everything patched up and ready to go.
At least the ring is still there in that house and is able to be taken out! This is cute definitely deserve a thumbs up! Good luck babe!

Go to a hardware store and get a tool like this:
It's a long, flexible stem with an extendable claw. You hold the handle and push a button on it to extend the claw. You then can fish around and grab the ring. It may be in the plumbiing section.

try a really long pair of hemostats. Can you even see the ring? I hate to say it but you may heve to damage the wall and it would be worth it when you see the look on mom's face

Wow I have some suggestions:

Use chopsticks

Use a straw, insert one end into the hole and connect something that sucks air, like a vaccum cleaner on the OTHER side
