The check engine light came on 3 times in our 99 Accord LX in the last month. First it was just the gas cap, then the evap canister and other parts were replaced and my mechanic thinks it's the PCM. This was his computer readout - code P1457. I then took it to the Honda dealer twice, once they said it was code P1457 but really P1456 (they replaced the evapconstant
shut valve and a new gas cap, although the car had a new after market gas cap) and a secondary code P0420 (catalytic converter below threshold), saying the catalytic converter needed replacing and the second time it was code P1457 - large evap leak - removed gas cap and reinstalled - system OK,
but still a secondary code P0420. I had the catalytic converter replaced by my local mechanic Monday and the check engine light came on again today (code P1457). AZ said it was the same code. All parts of the evap system have now been replaced. Where do I go from here? Is it the PCM?

You should really picl one place to have your car serviced. If you keep going to the mechanic and the dealership they will keep playing the one against the other...Well the mechanic shouldnt have done that or the Dealership should have done that. I think that it is a rip off to go to the dealership, but if you had stuck with them on this problem and spent all that money on them they would probably find and fix the problem for free by this point. Just remember that every dealership has to answer to Honda. If you get screwed around at one you can threaten, then write to Honda Corporate. They will get the dealership to take care of you.

First, NEVER replace a part till you know the problem.Second, replace your "mechanik". Any "mechanik" who "thinks" the problem is ??? should get out of the business. You spent a lot on a cat. that wasn't needed and now a bundle on a pcm that is in perfect shape. If it was the pcm you would have more than an evap. system code. You have a vacuum leak in the evap. system and that in turn messes up the fuel mixture so the cat. throws a code because it don't know whats happening. Stop replacing parts and go back to the gas cap and try again. You have a hose or something similar that is broken or disconnected. Find it and you are fine.No big deal. The gas cap is still very suspicious. inspect the area carefully for something that is not letting the cap seal properly. Go back to beginning of this rant and read the part that says FIRST

Well I sort of can relate,we have a 05 caravan that got a engine light after we bought a locking gas cap.Three caps later we finally got the right cap and the light went away. Our kids have the same vehicle and I noticed when you took of there cap you could hear the pressure escaping Our caravan didn't make that sound so I knew the tank wasn't pressurizing like it was suppose to.I believe all new cars fuel tanks should be pressurized.I don't know if this info will hep at all but good luck to you.

u have to tighten the gas cap up till it clicks at least 3 times if u dont u may be causing the problem yourself and your mechanix are makin the money for a simple mistake...does it come on shortly after as in a day or so after u get gas? yes i could be the pcm but its not likley espically for it to be an intermittn problem...sounds more like a selinoid stickin or the gas cap not being tight...and yes aftermarket caps can cause that code i have seen that more than once!...and if u installed a aftermarket cat u may of created another problem for your self...some of them only last a few months on these cars...honda parts are more expensive but well worth it!
