counting sheep works for me. hmmm just thinking about studying makes me tired. You should try relaxing teas--they might help. I usally cant sleep cos my heartbeat is too fast. Apparently smoking is bad 4 ur sleeping patterns. u should dim ur lights like 30mins b4 u go 2 bed cos then ur warning ur body ur gonna sleep-which saves the endless torture of lying in bed waiting to fall asleep.

1) Your sleep rhythm is probably off. Try on a weekend staying up nonstop from morning to the next day's night. You should be so exhausted that if you go to bed at 2100 you could get up whenever you need to.
2) Use a White Noise Generator. This can be anything. I personally use an old fan, but whatever suits your tastes best. The worst is silence, when you can hear distinct noises. These will keep your brain active.
3) Food. Despite the fact that turkey containing Triptofan is false, being stuffed with a bunch of comfort foods and then being left to watch football is a surefire way to make you sleepy. Maybe some mashed potatoes before bed will help.
4) Position. Try laying in various positions. The way I sleep most times nowadays (oddly enough it has changed over the years) is flat on my back with pillows under my head. Be as comfortable as possible. Make sure you are warm.
5) Complete (or as best you can manage) darkness. If there's less to focus on, your mind won't stay as active. Once left with your own thoughts, it will only be a matter of time before your mind gets bored and falls asleep.
I hope these tips will help you, but there are some people who can just sit and think for hours. Then again, I also have friends who go to bed at 3 every morning and wake up at 6 with no adverse effects every day all week. Its unnerving....

First off, after a half and hour, you should get up. Laying there will just make matters worse. Read, take a warm bath, have a warm cup of milk with honey, or organize a drawer. Routine is key for a good night's sleep. If you take your bath or shower around the same time each night, eat a snack, read, or watch TV, you should follow that routine nightly so your body knows when it's time to actually sleep. Also avoid caffeine throughout the day. It can stay in your system for a long time and keep you awake. They sell over the counter natural aids to help. I would steer clear of drugs. Try valerian root. It's an herb. Good luck.

You aren't tired if you take that long to fall asleep... takes you longer to hit deep sleep. It should take you 5 minutes or so to fall asleep. Don't get in bed when you are not tired.
When I am on a regular workout scheduleI have no problem falling asleep. About once a month I do need to take ambien though.

Laurie just gave you great advice.
You might want to add this piece of information that I just picked up. Buy some Jasmine Oil and put some on a cotton ball near your pillow or nearby so you can smell it. The scent makes you drowsy! Smells delicious, too.
You can also get some relaxation tapes (sounds of the surf, rain falling, soft music) and play them, QUIETLY as you lie in bed. If you are not alone in bed, try wearing a comfortable headset to keep from disturbing your partner. You can even get pillow speakers that work well.
Hope these suggestions help.
Nighty-nite!

There is a tea called Sleepytime, made by Celestial Seasonings. You can buy is in any grocery store. You won't feel it at first, but once you settle down in bed, it willl help you sleep. It does'nt taste bad either. It alway's works for me. If it doesn't work for you, you can tell your doctor, and maybe he can give you something to help you sleep. Good Luck! Hope this helps!

Try relaxing for a time before you go to bed. That way your body won't be revved up. If you need help, try a cup of tea with chamomile or valerien root in it: We used to give chamomile tea to my nephew a lot when he had trouble settling down to sleep.
Good luck!
