The band rose to fame as the backing group to bob dylan and became a very good band in their own right. I believe they were canadian. They, along with bob dylan, produced the famous basement tapes, where they wrote and recorded almost 200 songs in a period of a couple of months. I think Robbie Robertson was the main songwriter, although drummer Levon Helm also wrote a few. Their first album, which i think was called "music from big pink" or something along those lines, was their biggest album. They were mainly a country/country rock band, some hits are The Weight, Stage Fright, The Night They Drove Old DIxie Down, When You Awake, along with the song you're after, Up On Cripple Creek. They are actually quite a well known band, so finding information on the shouldn't be too hard. This was just stuff of the top of my head, it's not much but i guess it's a start.
Your mum has good taste! Good luck with it

Cripple Creek
Robbie Robertson was the lead singer, the name of the group is "The Band". You should be able to find this group everywhere (online, in actual music stores similar to Tower, not like a Musicland or Wherehouse).
They also sang a very popular song called "The Weight".

Up on Cripple Creek by the Band. They used to be Bob Dylan's backup band and were called the Hawks. Robbie Robertson wrote most of their hits. The Last Waltz is on DVD. It is their last concert and was directed by Martin Scorcese.

The song is Cripple Creek. If your mom is a fan of The Band, rent the video "The Last Waltz" - it was their last concert, Thanksgiving, about 1975. The Band started out with Ronnie Hawkins and The Hawks, but they changed their name when "hawk" became synonomous with war monger. They backed up Bob Dylan and everyone referred to them as "The Band". They were great! They were all fabulous musicians and three of them took turns as lead singers. Richard Manuel and Rick Danko are dead and Levon Helm had cancer - he still plays drums, but lost his singing voice. They were Canadian, except for Levon Helm who was from Arkansas.

Straight down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico..
It's by The Band and it's called Up on Cripple Creek.

There should be tons of stuff about them on the Internet - this was, after all, the band Bob Dylan worked with, and Martin Scorcese did a movie about them called "The Last Waltz". Do a little net surfing, I'm sure you will find plenty.

Yeah, I've heard of them - they were popular in the 70's - you might have heard some of their songs today on the radio...I don't know what Crinkle Creek is, though...
