Before buying them, if you're buying fish for the first time, you may want to read this article on keeping fish, and setting up your first tank, as you can't just buy fish then sling them in a container of water http://www.tropicalfishcentre.co.uk/Setting.htm
This site should also be useful:

I think I recall that before you add the fish, you need to put water in the tank at least a week before you add the fish, otherwise they won't last very long due to the fact fish aren't particularly fond of things like chlorine & fluoride they add at the water treatment works before it goes to your tap.

As for where to get them, just have a look around a pet store that sells them, more common ones like Guppies & Goldfish aren't usually that expensive anyway as far as I remember.

It depends. Do you want a fish that will last long? If so don't get one from Wal Mart. Unless it is a Betta fish. I have had a beta fish from Wal Mart and it lived for close to five months and that is pretty good for a Wal Mart fish. But if you want a really good fish go to Pet Co.

Go to the pet store and ask for feeder fish. These are usually either guppies or gold fish. They are sold as food for other animals. They are usually only 10 to 15 cents.

Depending on the fish you want. Head to a pet shop and look for "feeder fish" Ask for some if you can't find any. (These are the fish they sell for feeding bigger, oscars and ciclids and such). sometimes they even sell goldfish as feeder fish.. Usually for as low as 50 cents.

majority tropical or not, are not expensive to begin with , unless you plan to set up a tank improperly then which it could get kinda pricey, replacing the dead fish and all
