Normal Modeling clay is made of a mixture of regular clay and oil. This is done specifically so it will never harden.
The reason for making sculptures out of modeling clay is so that it can be uses to test a concept that will be built later of something else, or as an original that you intend to pull a mold from.
If you have made something that you want to keep as is, just keep it cool and dry and keep it from where it will collect dust, as the oil will attract and keep the dust attached.
If you heat it the whole thing will probably become a puddle before you could drive off the oils so that would not work.
Painting it with something like a lacquer might make the dust easier to wipe off but it would still never harden

Having left a 5# block out for 15 years in a studio that can get in excess of 100degrees, I just started to use it last month and I will verify that though the skin has hardened,1/64", it can still be readily pushed around; hence the block did not harden.

Just leave the clay out to dry. It will soon harden on it's own.

if it is water based you slowly let it dry out drying too fast and it will crack if it is oil base you don't...... it is made to stay soft so a mold can be made of it and then it can be used again
