The times gone past; the good old days.
(Scots : auld, old + lang, long + syne, since')

This wonderful song of friendship and conviviality is sung throughout the English-speaking world on many occasions, especially to usher in the New Year at midnight. The words are by the well-known poet Robert Burns who claimed he had "collected" rather than composed them. First published in James Johnson's Scots Musical Museum (1796) and set to the tune (no longer used) of For old long Sine my jo, Burns completed his verses before December 17, 1788.

The song's name is in Scots, and may be translated literally as 'old long since', or more idiomatically 'long ago', or 'days gone by'. In his retelling of fairy tales in the Scots language, Matthew Fitt uses the phrase “In the days of auld lang syne” as the equivalent of “Once upon a time”.

as a Scotsman it would be very remis of me not to answer this, it does indeed mean for old times sake which gets annoying when people sing for the sake of auld lang syne because they are in fact just repeating themselves the proper line should be just for auld lang syne thank you
