Before you jump to the state level, I'd start more local. Establish yourself politically in your city or town. Write in opinion columns, get in the local papers.
You could just get the signatures to run on the ballot and then start campigning. Get an endoursement from your party locally if you can.

You first need to practice telling lies, stealing and blaming it on someone else, and generally knifing people in the back. It takes a lot more than just qualifications these days.

You have to get out there and kiss some butt cheeks. Then you need to get up to speed on that double speak thing. That should get you off to a good start anyway.
