It sounds as though you dropped it down the hole where the door latch goes into the jamb. If so, you'll need to pry the door frame trim off the wall. Start at the bottom and work your way up. You can use a chisel to get under the trim and tap it with a hammer from the side. Be very careful and don't be in a hurry or you'll crack the trim. You don't need to remove it completely, just enough to get at the small gap between the door frame and the wood stud that supports the wallboard.

The ring will be in that gap somewhere between the hole and the floor. There are shims (small pieces of wood) between the frame and the stud. The ring will be on top of the first shim below the hole. Get a coat hanger and cut it to be straight and bend one end in an "L" shape. Use it to hook the ring and pull it out from the side.

If the door is an outside door and the hole is really deep, it may go all the way through the first stud. In that case, you'll need to ust a hole saw to drill a 2" diameter hole near the bottom of the wall and fish it out using the coat hanger. Then you'll need to patch the hole you mad in the sheetrock. That's fairly easy for a grownup to do and the repair will be invisible. If you're young, look for a handy guy or girl who is older to help you.

I hope this helps.

A stick is definitely not the thing to use. You might try a fine wire with a small hook bent into the end. Get some piano wire at a hobby store. That ring can be retrieved if you know it's there. It's possible you could use a drop of epoxy, also from the hobby store, on the end of a small stick. If it's 5 minute epoxy, let it set for an hour.

OK... heres the answer you're looking for. BREAK THE WALL!!! But heres what you NEED to do. Make sure you have some money saved to have the wall repaired- you're not going to break the wall... you're going to create a small enough hole for your hand to fit in... then when you have the ring, go to Home Depot and ask anyone there how to repair a small hole in the wall. I did this about 10 years ago when i lived with Mom and Dad, and i bought some stuff from Home Depot, along with some paint that matched the color of the wall.. and my parents never found out.

Well, don't know what you tried...

Here are some thoughts...

1. A wire coat hanger--bend it out, create a small hook on the end of it and try to "hook" it.
2. Try a wire coat hanger again, no hook at the end. Get some double-stick tape (that stuff is REALLY sticky) and try to get it to stick on the hanger.
3. Try the coat hanger again, no hook, and buy some "fun tack" or "Command Adhesive Tapes" (both very sticky) and cover the end with those to get it out.

Just some thoughts...but hey, you were 1!!! Don't feel bad, you didn't know any better back then.

take a stick and get a couple of pieces of gum, chew it up really good, roll it around in your hand really good and then stick it to the end! Hope you have some luck! It's really sweet of you to do that!
