Dorm rooms (most are not too big)..this is what I did when i stayed in the dorm..I took my clothes.. Depending on what the weather was..I took most of my short sleeve and a few long sleeve and jacket ..I went back home before the weather changed and switched out. I took info from school I got related to the school, major, grad. plans, etc. I took some photos, cell phone, charger, etc. I bought me a small refrigerator for sodas, candy (late night studying), etc. You may want to take a lamp..if they have one..you cana always send it home..take personal care items..yes..toilet paper too..schools do not provde that.. school supplies, etc... take only what is necessary to feel at home ..stereo maybe..you can always send home what you don't need or go back and get more..Unless you are in a private room you will NOT have a lot of room at all.. It really doesn't matter what you take the items in, most of the suitcases, boxes, etc will have to be sent back.

I live a ways away from my college, so when I came to school I brought EVERYTHING. I think I ended up with three boxes and two suitcases. Not to mention a lot of stuff we bought when we got there. It depends on the size of your room of course, but I know some kids even bought a UHaul. Make sure you dont forget little things like light bulbs! It can take forever to put in a matenience request. I wouldn't worry too much about looking crazy, anyone who is new will be bringing a crazy amount of stuff. Good luck!

Before you move into your dorm room inspect the area to find out how much space you have. You'll have to imagine where all the stuff will go.
Then bring only stuff that you will use. There's a lot of things that can be left behind. Have a friend, or your parents, help you bring the stuff in. It's okay if your parents help. Just tell them you'll need them to keep a low profile and leave as soon as the car is emptied.
Any boxes should be returned with your parent's (or friend's) car. You can keep one suitcase in your dorm room. You can also leave a large storage (Rubbermaid) storage container in your room.

Separate your stuff into must have, really want to have, and want to have. Put the must have stuff in your dorm room first. If there is room, put the rest of the stuff in.
Be considerate of your roommate, too!
I wouldn't go with more than 8 boxes, suitcases, if possible.
Good luck.

What I did was take a little at a time . Every one does it differently
Some people had tons of stuff.and had to take some back b/c the room would not hold it all. Dorm rooms are different on different colleges and universities Best of luck to you!!

From what I could tell when I dropped my son off for his first year of college this past September, EVERYONE basically looks "crazy" with all of their gear. If you are driving there, you have more latitude, obviously... we took his stuff in wheelie duffle bags, laundry baskets, shopping bags, milk crates (which stayed behind), etc. When we left, virtually all of the "luggage" left with us, except for a couple of larger gym bags (ie for use on a weekend away from school, etc.) which were stored under his bed.
Best of luck to you!
