The definition of Menstruation according to my medical dictionary is the following:
The periodic discharge through the vagina of a bloody secretion containing tissue debris from the shedding of the endometrium from the non-pregnant uterus. The average duration of menstruation is 4 to 5 days, and it recurs at approximately 28-day intervals throughout the reproductive life of non-pregnant women. I hope this helps.

Oh boy. I hope this isn't a stupid question. It is the body of a girl turning into that of a woman, meaning she can now give birth, reproduce. The woman's cycle each month is a process where the lining of the uterus prepares itself for the process. The lining is made up of blood and other matter which is where the egg which has dropped down from the uterus earlier waits for the sperm of the male to meet up with and then when everything is right the egg is fertilized by the sperm and a baby is formed slowly over 9 mos. If ther is no sperm or if the egg and sperm do not fertilize the lining of the uterus sheds and travels down through the vaginal canal and is what we call a period or menstruation. this happens once a month and it can be very discomforting and painful as well as cause anemia if a young woman looses too much blood or doesn't eat enough iron rich foods. It is the way the human race is reproduced. Without it none of us would be here. lol. Look it up next time! I don't know why I answered this.

Menstruation is important for quite a number of reasons. Each month, a woman has her menses. She releases old blood, but it is actually how the egg is expelled from her body. A woman is born with all her eggs where as men make sperm as they go. A menstrual cycle is also important as it tells you when you are pregnant... if you don't get your period one month, you know something is up...

It is hell on earth when all the women in the world bleed all day and night for ab 4-7 days and experiende HORRIBLE cramps in their lower stomach for ab 3 days which makes us irritable as hell bc we're sick and evrything is annoying especialy our boyfriends, boss, mom, and traffic:) It's important bc it cleans out all the Uterus lining and stuff which would have been used if we got pregnant that month and is a sign that we are able to get pregnant in the future so I hear.
