Lay the chains out flat. Make sure everything is twist free and the fasteners are all facing out. Drive onto chains about a third of the way. Wrap everything around the tires and fasten the inside first. Work your way out and tighten with bungee cords on the outside over the rim. Only to be used when stuck. Not for road use. Disregard the 4WD saves all answer. All you'll have then is four spinning wheels instead of two. It's traction that counts, not how many wheels go round and round. When using chains, take the advice of the turtle...slow and steady. If they come off, you'll know pretty quick.

make sure they are not twisted and lay them out straight in front of the rear wheels. drive ahead until about 1 foot of chain is sticking out behind the tire, pull the chains over top of the tire and attach the fasteners inside first. get as tight as possible then install a bungee cord across them.

tire chains should only be used at very low speeds...to get you unstuck. definately NOT for traveling around. If you are going to be in a snowy/icy area for a while and want to keep your family as safe as possible, invest in some good STUDDED snow tires. On a rental, I dont know if they will allow it, but you can ask.
god bless and stay safe!!
