Well, if some things were made better, we wouldn't have to be discontented with them as much. Horse and cart, I think. The more you create, the more people want, and the more people want something, the more ways they want it done, so you can never win by inventing your way to solve everyone's problems (look at Windoze, for example).
The best thing to do is consider what is truly necessary, and what the NET Creativity needs to be. In other words, what can be created that will be useful for the future, but use the least resources, unlike the current economic model which pushes people to simply create a LOT of crap that is useless on the premise that more is always better as long as someone gets rich in and for a short time.

Yes and no. I mean, if you have a bucket and can carry water from a creek to your house, you will be able to water your flowers, HOWEVER...a water source AT your home would be more efficient. In that case, your discontent with having to carry it in buckets would prompt you to invent indoor plumbing but it's not a necessity, as you CAN do it the old way, and achieve your goal.
Sometimes though, you create to express happiness, or just for entertainment. If I finger paint with a 5 year old, I am creating but not out of a sense of discontent.

No, right now I might go create a song. It's not because I feel the world is lacking without a new song, I just feel creative. Inventing a product to help people is another story: there must be a common problem to fix that people are discontented with.

No. Though much art has come about as a result of discontent. A recent study has actually concluded that being in love lends a tremendous boost to creativity. In mapping the brain - MRI, PET scans - they found that even thinking about a person that you long for can significantly boost activity in the creative centers of the brain.

You need obsession in order to create. I would not say discontent. Newton created the calculus from his obsession with describing gods truth.

Not just discontent - you need any strong emotion - such as love or hate - those emotions also help to get the creative juices flowing!

No. I think it's way past time to bury this "art must come from suffering" MYTH.
You can be inspired to create, stimulated to create, or be just plain curious -- and creative. Happy people are also capable of creating beautiful, magnificent things.

You've never heard that "necessity is the mother of invention"? Or "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"?
