My husband's flight got cancelled twice (thank you United Airlines) and then he was put on stand-by for tomorrow. Why would they cancel flights to areas that do not have any weather problems? I can't seem to get a straight answer from anyone I call at the airlines or the airport. Any suggestions?

Because a small group of people that live around the airport refuse to let them expand it, also there is often adverse weather conditions around the airport.

well, it has more flights going through it than any other airport except one (Atlanta)...so naturally, that's one reason. And it us a hub for so many airports...if you think about a bicycle wheel with it's center circle where all the spokes come out of...that's all of the flights feeding into the center circle, but then going out again. So, like, people coming from Omaha that are going to Cleveland: they change planes in Chicago. This means all the nations OTHER weather affects the flights into O'Hare. Since United's second biggest hub is Denver...which is closed due to weather...that means many of United's planes can't get into Chicago to do the "next stop' for all those fliers. But I'm sorry you got stuck in it...I've been there stuck myself!

I fly in and out of ORD quite a bit. On this last trip I was delayed out of DEN to ORD a couple of hours (due to air traffic control, we missed out "wheels up" by 2 minutes), then delayed from ORD to GRR 45 minutes. On the way I had the chance to sit by 3 United pilots, and they were talking about how short staffed they are right now - too many flights and not enough pilots. They have to shuttle a lot of pilots around to cover flights, and most of the delays were because of the crew. You also have to remember that Chicago is the "Windy City", and ORD has more problems then Midway does. If you can avoid ORD do it, if not (like me), learn to live with it. Its big, busy and in a bad location.

Chicago has serious issues with keeping themselves organized. If it is possible next time have him fly into Rockford Illinois. It's just He will have a hour trip to get back to Chicago, but it's well worth it. It's a smaller airport that rarely has cancelled flights. It's also extrememly quick to get through. He will make up the driving time in just breezing through getting his luggage.

Regarding cancellations due to weather:

Carriers carefully plan out their schedules and availability based on being able to fly all routes, and if weather throws a wrench into that, it has ripple effects throughout the system.

Denver is a major United Airlines hub. By shutting down (or majorly slowing down) DEN, planes and people aren't where they're supposed to be. If they're not where they're supposed to be, they can't go where they're supposed to go.

Let's say a plane is supposed to originate in LA and go to Denver, pick up a new crew, fly on to Chicago, and go from Chicago to New York.

If it can't get into Denver and is re-routed to Phoenix, the relief crew isn't able to get on the plane. The FAA has strong regulations about the number of hours any given crew is permitted to fly at one stretch. So they have to scrounge a relief crew out of Phoenix and rebalance the crews and equipment to fill the holes that have been created.

And even if the plane gets INTO Denver, if it can't get OUT to Chicago, it can't pick up passengers at O'Hare to go on to New York. It's a domino effect.
