So, today in English..we read "The Lady, or the Tiger?"...and I aboslutely loved it! I think that the lady came out of the door and into the arena because most lovers would want their loved one to live...not die.

What do you think?

Well, I am in some ways, but definitely not in other ways. For instance, I am really polite in public and at gatherings. I help people all of the time, say hello and show interest in other people, and am a very good hostess. On the other hand, I do have a personality. Being ladylike really isn't a personality...it is an act you put on to benefit others. When I am with loved ones...I'm still really nice and helpful, but I swear when I feel like it, drink, and am completely myself. To me, "ladylike" is not something you can be. It is something you can do. Underneath those actions, there is always something more.

We read that last year in English and it's one of the few short stories we did that I actually enjoyed. I don't know whether I think the lady or the tiger came out.

40 years later, I still don't know what I think. As a previous answerer pointed out: who does the princess love more? The man or herself?

FYI...The story was a sensation when it was published (Sat. Evening Post?) and Frank Stockton was feted nationwide. The one question he was always asked is the one you can guess. He was urged to write a sequel by the public but his agent and manager disagreed.

He wrote the sequel and no matter which side of the question one was on, everyone was disappointed. He was excoriated by critics and the public alike. No more fetes for Frank. His reputation suffered dramatically and he never achieved his former status.

There was a young lady from Niger
Who smiled as she rode on a tiger
They came back from the ride
With the lady inside
And the smile on the face of the tiger

It all comes down to who she loves more, her lover or herself.
Could she watch her lover die, mauled to death because of her?
On the other hand, could she see her lover in the arms of another woman?

I believe that she chose the lady, just because her lover really had no choice in the matter. He didn't want to leave her, but he would have to "choose" between life and another love.

If it were me, if I were looking into the eyes of a man whom I loved, I don't know if I could bear to see him die. If he trusted me, if he wanted to live, I would give him the lady. Better for my love to die than for my lover to die. If my lover died, my heart would still break.
