Because they thought he was an anti war liberal who was hurting the US war effort in Vietnam by his singing at protest rallies/concerts & also speaking out against the war to the press. Kind of like what Bush is doing now only there's no one as famous as Lennon protesting the Iraq war.

Lennon was known to have friends and connections to some extreme groups. Even though he was cleared the goal was actually to get to other that he associated with.

Probably because he was seen as a dangerous radical, governments usually take anybody speaking with the truth as a threat

Because of his ties to radical groups, and openly admitted communists. As well for his efforts to have convicted murderers convictions overturned, and his support of legalizing drugs.

because... he was so influential they wanted to put him behind bars... they were looking for an excuse.
