An iPod is a brand of MP3. Most modern Mp3 players do everything an iPod does no matter what the commercials told you. You pay for an iPod's image, not a better product.
I bought a crappy $40 MP3 player from a no-name company. It has 2 Gig storage (8 hours of music), has an 8 hour battery life, and measures less than 1" x 1" with a built in clip. It will store any type of file just like an external hardrive and it will play all major media file types, not just mp3 files. I can use iTunes, too, but why would I want to? There are many competing music file services which are much cheaper than a dollar a song. MP3 players do not just play ripped songs.

As most people already said, an MP3 is a type of condensed music file. An MP3 player can store these files for you to listen to. An IPOD is just one brand, that plays MP3s.
Many MP3 players can also hold other common music files, like Windows Media Player files are very common.
I know aside from IPOD, Creative is another big name. I personally love my Toshiba Gigabeat. I found that Toshiba is the best bargin on the market. You can buy a 40GB player for the same price of a 6GB IPOD. See the difference? The prices usually go by brand, and memory.
Toshiba is also cool because it is compatiable with Windows and Napster. So, thats why I like it. But I will admit as far as all the extra goodies go, IPODs are everywhere, and you can find all the stuff for them everywhere as well. I still wouldn't buy one just for that convience but others might like that.
Hope I helped a little!

There isn't one, it's the same thing. IPOD is simply a brand name for an MP3 player.

Let me see if I can get this right.
An IPOD is where you can download lots and lots of music and pay for the downloads from the site you choose.
An MP3 player is where you can transfer CD's you've bought, download from free and pay for sites.
