i was supposed to have my final exam for macroeconomics tonight but the professor didn't show up. none of the other faculty members knew where he was, he didn't call anyone and after waiting for an hour, the head of the teacher's association told us we could leave. is this bad?

No, it is not an "automatic A."

And I think it was probably the head of the department that told you to leave. We don't have "teachers associations" in college.

Your professor really screwed up, and will catch hell from his department, but it does NOT affect your final exam grade. The professor will have to reschedule the exam. There's also a possibility that the exam will be eliminated, and your grades will be determined by the assignments you've already done. But that possibility depends on a number of factors that are totally out of your control.

My daughter just completed a community college sociology class which was only offered for 4 Saturdays (8 hour days). The class was very badly executed anyway, but on the 4th and final day, when the students had to give PowerPoint presentations in teams, the teacher didn't show up. She sent HER SISTER (who is NOT a teacher of any kind) who only vaguely said "she had an emergency" - but the sister talked on the phone with the sister several times during the day. The SISTER insisted the students give their presentations (didn't videotape them or anything), and then showed a pair of two-hour, ancient PBS specials for the rest of the afternoon. When the students handed in their work, at first the SISTER refused to take the documents, complaining (verbatim) "She didn't say I had to take her nothin'!"

These are adults with JOBS and many of them can't sacrifice another 8-hour day to repeat their team presentations. This just happened on Saturday and she will be speaking to the head of the department tonight.

It may be very bad, considering that something could have happened to your professor!! You do not get an "automatic" A on your final. Best case, the Professor is alright and just eliminates the final exam. Worst case....let's hope that nothing bad really happened.

It is not bad. You don't get an automatic A. The final can be eliminated or it can be rescheduled.
