iTunes gift card. Who doesn't like those. Everyone likes music. And if they don't have iTunes, it's not hard to start, especially with a gift card.

I really like the movie/gift card idea. The one I usually go with is a cheap stocking that I fill with classic toys (slinky, play doh, jacks, crayons/coloring book) and some candy. If the amount of the stocking is less than the $20 - $35 I then get a gift card to Wal Mart or the Mall and stick it in there. This always makes the receiver feel like a kid again. And they can still use the gift card on something else.

Although it was in a different setting, the most successful "generic gift exchange" I saw was set up in the style of a white elephant. People were asked not to bring "gag gifts," but to bring a gift (men bought for men and women bought for women). There were no names on the gifts, though, just numbers. Then we drew names for order, and everyone either selected something that had already been opened or they selected an interesting wrapped gift from the pile. We didn't know in advance how the selection had been set up. Also, people were asked not to bring gift cards, so there were a lot of really thoughtful gifts. This worked pretty well, but my other experiences with gift exchanges would lead me to avoid them.

A gift card or a handful of lottery tickets attached to an old stinky shoe, wrapped up and pretty of course. The tickets or gift card make it worth keeping, and the old shoe will surely get a good laugh.

Gift Cards are a good christmas presents for everyone because you know what shop they are buying it from and you know they wont spend the money on anything useless. Some good sites are :
http://linkachi.com/?836
http://urlx.org/directtrack.com/6f507
http://digbig.com/4qhym
http://doiop.com/d6ho82
For all of those all you have to do is enter your email address or zip code and reply back to them and you will receive a gift card from those stores free of charge, I got my old navy one from there and it was totally worth it.
