The best 'place' I've spent it at was Sydney harbour. But as with most NYE do's there were sooo many people and everything was expensive.
The place is not the issue if you want to have a good time. The best NYE's I've had have been at small house parties where it's easy to get home, no huge entry ticket fee and being with good friends.
Most my disappointing anticlimax new years eves have been where I have planned to do something 'big' but ended up queuing outside at club at midnight or not being able to get home. So my advice is keep it simple!
