Moths use the moon as a compass to find direction. They keep the angle of light constant so they can fly straight. The reason they appear to be attracted to light is because of the angle at which the light should be,is high in the sky above them like the moon. But when the source of light is down low (candle, fire, bolb)they try to keep that angle constant - but in fact end up flying in cirlces around the light source and sometimes into it. They are not are attracted to the light presay, but just get confused.

They do, to some degree, but the level of light pollution in industrialized societies is very high. Much higher than the reflected light from the moon in most urban and suburban settings. In the countryside where I grew up, moths were attracted to the reflection of the full moon on the water where the fish would eat them.

A moth's eyes, like a human's eyes, contain gentle sensors and alter in accordance to the quantity of sunshine the sensors come across. In severe illumination, gentle from each and all the moth's hundreds of fixed-concentration lens aspects is channeled to its very own sensor (ommatidium). In low illumination, gentle from multiple lenses is channeled to an identical ommatidium to boost gentle sensitivity. you in all likelihood journey some moments of blindness once you change on a bright gentle after your eyes have adjusted to darkness, or once you're unexpectedly in darkness after being in bright gentle. A moth's darkish-adapting mechanism responds plenty greater slowly than its gentle-adapting mechanism. as quickly as the moth comes on the factor of a bright gentle, it could have a perplexing time leaving the sunshine because going returned into the darkish renders it blind for hence long. in the case that the moth escapes, it won't undergo in innovations the subject with flying too close to the sunshine and could in all likelihood discover itself in an identical trap 22 concern as quickly as greater.
