I've heard and believe, but my parents don't believe me.

I do know that Venice is sinking. During the day workers section off parts of the plazas and pour sand between the foundations/stones etc on a constant basis. I thought this was not true until i saw it myself. Very interesting. The city was also flooded and on one of the builings the water line is marked... it covered the city!

Well the water level is increasing, and all the coasts are "sinking". In Italy, the city called Venice is already a "water city" where you can only commute by boat.
Rome and the Vatican are not sinking at all :) they are quite fine :)

Yes, it is responding to the subduction of the European Plate under the African Plate. The entire Mediterranean Sea is a result of this subduction with the Alps being raised due to the collision. This type of basin is due to bending of the continents, in this instance, the African Plate (continent). I believe this type of basin is called a "foreland basin", but I am not positive.

Venice is, because it's built on top of a lagoon. Other than that, it's fine.
