My friends say they're Goth but I know thats BS. I think they're rock-pop.

Green Day came onto the music scene as a California punk-pop band riding in on the wave of sucessful "alternative" music that included Nirvana and the like.
They are usually classified as Alternative Pop/Rock, Punk Revival, Post-Grunge, and Punk-Pop, according to All Music Guide (www.allmusic.com).
They're not normally classified as Goth music, seeing as how much "goth" music is really part of the emo, metal, or industrial genres (and actual "Goths" from the original Goth movement listened to all sorts of things besides the music people usually think "Goths" listen to).
You can hear a lot of rock and punk influences in their music, and some of their more recent work (i.e. American Idiot) is possibly a little more serious in tone than their earlier work. But it isn't nescesarily "goth", though some Goths may like their music.

*Sigh* Yeah yeah. They're a really hyped up band, yeah they're pop rock. No they aren't goth, tell your friend they're wrong.....infact they're almost emo.....goth died in the 90's almost

Ignore the person who said punk. "Punk" is the Sex Pistols, and Ramones, etc. Everybody knows they aren't "punk"
only Green Day's die-hard elementary school fans, who are by the way the only people who still like Green Day, would call it punk, because they weren't even alive to hear punk and Green Day is the only band they know. And for some reason they really like buying t-shirts with the logo on it so people wil think they are "cool" and "hard core"

At a music award show Green Day themselves said "We want to prove that Rock and Roll still has a Place in the music industry and MTV" so I say Rock and Roll

They ruin rock. They're a horrible emo band which gives the genre of rock a bad bad name.
