Today I found an orange spider whose body was about the size of a quarter. The body/back of it was round and it had a white stripe running down the middle.(front to back) Looked like it could have been a series of white dashes.(didnt get that close) There were also 4 small black patches on its back that were on each side of white line..one was upper left..lower left of line and vice versa on right side of line. Never have I seen such a spider before. Any ideas? Oh, and its legs looked hairy and brown!

You didn't say where you are located, but, assuming it is eastern United States, the description of it as bright orange suggests the
marbled spider, Araneus marmoreus. The white
stripe doesn't fit very well, though. Try also the
introduced European species Araneus diadematus

Well first of all ,it depends on what state you live in. Each state has their fair share of different spiders, some more, some less of different species. Because you did not indicate your state, this is what i suggest. Example, I live in Pennsylvania, when i had to identify the spiders in my house, i went to google and typed" All spiders living in Pennsylvania" and it brought up a bunch of pictures of spiders for my state. You'll find several sites that will help you with your state. Hope it helps.

Most likely an Araneus orb weaver. See the below link for more, and better, info.

what you might do to identify this arachnid is to look up species of spiders that are native to your area, you can also do this on computer by doing a search.
