I'm a 28 y/o male teacher at a school. There is a co-worker at my school, he is much older than me. I know him, from saying hello in the school.
He seems to either pat me on the back or on the arm EVERYTIME he sees me and I say hello to him. Occassionally he would stretch out his hand and give me and handshake and says hello. I think he is kind of cute.
I overhead him mentioning of a grown daughter with another colleague. But, I'm not sure if this guy has an interest in other guys? Do you think this guy is being just nice or is flirting?

If you are not the only young male teacher, look to see how your co-worker acts around the other teachers to see if he is just as friendly with others. He could be interested in other guys, but from your description I think he is just friendly and your thinking he is cute could cause you to project onto him what you would like him to be.

I am not gay any more but i will answer your question to the best of my ability if you dont mind. I have had a grown man when i was a bit younger pat me on my leg as he walked about. I was with my grandmother because i had to pay a car payment in a town and he must of thought i was gay when i wasnt, all because i watching a soap that was on, while i was waiting on my grandmother as she shopped in a potter barn in commerce. Now i am against the gay way but i won't stop you or try too, because i can't say anything since i was that way one time. I think he might just like you. I don't really know what to say other than that you could approach him and ask him if he is interested in the same gender. If i were gay i would pass him a note asking him if i could talk in private with him for a moment. If he makes a pass at you then you will know.

I think that his open affection is not a necessary sign of gayness. He may in fact just be a friendly guy.
An older daughter does say he is either married or has been.
Being divorced does not mean he is gay.
I would try to communicate with him and be more friendly extend an interest ask him questions like " Are you married" that would be a good start.
Are you obviously gay is that why you think his behavior is a sign that he may be interested?
If so that could be a sign but again just be nice friendly and show interest in him and become his friend that way you will learn much more.

A lot of men are just affectionate. School teachers are more rounded than most guys. He probably doesn't even aware of his simple affection. Mr. Neff was kind of like that. He had mannerisms that I might look back on and wonder if he might be gay... but I really don't think he was. He just was a weird teacher!

castle has got it right, never never date a work colleague, and especialy a school teacher because there are so many others who get involved, ie: boys, girls, mums, dads, fellow teachers, principals, and school teachers have a knack of getting involved in other teachers business. Forget about it man your 28y/o and dont need to wreck your career just yet, and keep your private business private. good luck

Is he American? If not, it's possible that his mannerisms are perfectly normal where he's from but seem overly friendly here in the US.
Alternatively, he could just be a very friendly person.

Sounds like he's being friendly. If he asks you out to dinner a little more after, he may be gay

It doesn't matter if he is flirting or just being nice. Never date a co-worker.
