Hybrids have GREAT gas mileage..I have friends who only fill up once a month!! But they are still in the working stages since they haven't been out that long and are 5grand+ a regular car. Any 4 cylinder car will do the trick..all depends on what you are looking for.

It depends on how much you are driving to make the best decision. Look at the total miles you drive, and using a figure like $2.50 per gallon (it ain't gonna get much less in the future, folks...) see how much you would save with 20mpg, 30mpg, 40mpg, etc...Then see where the extra cost for something like a hybrid would make sense. They often don't.
The difference between a Honda hybrid and a Toyota Corolla is only $400 per year at 15,000 yearly miles. But the Honda costs
over $6000 more! So you would have to drive it for 15 yrs to pay the difference.
Also, the kind of driving you do matters...mostly highway? or city? Look at the estimated MPG of the car for the kind of driving you do. Some cars do great on the highway but pretty poor in the city.

I have a 2002 Mitsubishi Galant and I'm pleased with the gas mileage. I don't know anything about cylinders and such. I get the oil changed regularly.

I had a 95 Geo metro. It was a 3 cyl. 1ltr engine. It got awesome gas mileage. I would still have it if I hadn't pro created (needed a safer car for my family)

a car with a 4 cylinder engine. hondas, ford escort... if you do a LOT of mileage, you could look into getting a diesel engine vehicle from VW. they can get well over 50mpg but you'll spend more on the engine and maintenance.
the best value is a used 4-cylinder vehicle with not a lot of options to inflate the price. 4-cylinder engines deliver good economy, are simple and reliable in design, and powerful enough to power a practical small station wagon like an escort/focus wagon or suzuki esteem.
and if fuel economy is important to you, like it is to me, the most important thing is to keep up on your vehicle maintenance, and mind your "check engine" light
if you take care of your car and drive the suggested speed, you will enjoy the best fuel economy just as the vehicle was designed to do.
